Paradise Photos

Since I received my new camera I have failed to take it out . . . until today! I am still learning the camera new gadgets. I went out of Chico towards Paradise and ran into a few cows, goats, and nice landscapes. OH! and a few pieces of metal art. Here you go!

Free Hugs Campaign

FreeHugsCampaign.org and Free-Hugs.com

"In this age of social disconnectivity and lack of human contact, the effects of the Free Hugs campaign became phenomenal". . . "What we then witness is the true spirit of humanity come together in what can only be described as awe inspiring. In the Spirit of the free hugs campaign, PASS THIS TO A FRIEND and HUG A STRANGER! After all, If you can reach just one person."

"FREE HUGS is a Social Experience company committed to promoting social value. We strive to tap into the heart of the community through creativity and innovative ideas in order to create opportunities that transform peoples’ lives."

"With grass root marketing tactics we promote products and ideas that are in line with our core values and the FREE HUGS message. Through speaking engagements, festivals, charitable walks, corporate and school functions, and volunteering efforts we are able to achieve this goal. Our efforts present the opportunity to share our message with corporations as a tool for team building, to schools as a character builder, and community organizations to build bridges between people from all walks of life. Partnering with various charities, we use our unique approach to raise money and awareness for their causes. We also organize FREE HUGS teams around the country to do the same and spread the FREE HUGS lifestyle."

The video below may look a little familiar, as it was shot in Chico this past year.My favorite part is at 3.5 minutes where a guys gets off his bike and parks it just to interrupt two guys and hug him.

p.s. Turn my music off on my blog to listen to the great song they have on the video.

. . . and then there was One

Yesterday we took a hike up Upper Bidwell Park after a few lost trails and conquering the top of the mountain we started the hike down. Halfway down the mountain we saw two guys going along another trail riding unicycles. Yep, that's right! It looked something like this . . .

Mountain Unicycling (also known as Muni)

"Today there are hundreds of mountain unicyclists riding all kinds of terrain across the world. The world's best known, Kris Holm, is a Canadian. He is quoted as saying that a mountain unicyclist must get used to falling down a lot."

UM! really?!?!? who would have guest!?

"When can you Start?"

5 pages of applications

4 copies of my resume

3 letters of reference

2 hour long interviews

1 marketing portfolio

This basically sums up my entire week!

I thought i knew everything there was to know about interviewing and landing a career but apparently Mr. Delano failed to mention when you are in a city where no one knows your family members it is 10 times harder to land a job.

I usually walked into any locally owned business and they would say "Well hello there young lady - hows your grandpa doin'?" "Wow . . . i remember when you were this tall" as they lowered their hand to equal the height of the desk table. "When can you start?"

Even after Graduation Target picked me up faster than it took for my grades to come back. But that company was also simply looking for fresh young students to mold into their image - they could care less that i had marketing and advertising skills that could rock their world. Sorry, I have to get my confidence from somewhere.

Needless to say now that I am looking for something that fits what 'I' want to do and have been removed from my comfort zone it is much more challenging on my part to fight for a job in these uneasy days. Don't get me wrong there is nothing better than sleeping in and not knowing what day it is because every day is a Saturday. And having lunch/coffee with my friends any time of the day. But in all seriousness, all through high school and mostly through college i was handed free opportunities with a simply phone call and a check from my parents.

It's good to grow up!

Mother May I . . . Toot my Own Horn

Wednesday morning I had another interview at a bank. Business suit, my 'look smart' glasses, close toe shoes, straight silk hair cut, professional as I could be even though I am a complete mess inside. As I waiting in the comfortable chairs in the lobby before my interview i watched the bank tellers greet their guest with 'crazy happy insanely' smiles and everyone was just 'crazy happy insanely' happy with their professional box of professionalism. I was exhausted just watching them. As I observed this circus i mentally prepared myself to suck-it-up and convert my negative disposition into a 'i need this job' attitude. No inner arguments!
The entire hour long interview were based on situational questions to which i referred to my managerial and guest service experience. Let me be frank - I ROCK at interviewing. It is a gift i have (Kara's calls it my 'charm').

As i left the interview i felt very neutral. I did well, I answered every question with hard evidence of my professionalism and successes. But i had this gut feeling that the branch would rather have someone within the city (as i live 25 minutes away) or maybe someone with a banking background - something was simply not right with my departure of the interview.
This morning around 9 i received a call from the recruiting personal in Sacramento to which i pass on to my voicemail because i rather get one more hour of sleep then wake up early just to get rejected.

A few hours later i call her back to which the conversation goes something like this . . .

"Hello Janelle . . . this is (insert name) from the recruiting office of (insert name)"
"Yes, hello (insert name), how are you today? " (as if there is any point on her answering that question - it is simply one of societies must-do's)
"Oh I'm fine. Thank you. Do you have a moment to talk about you interview that you had yesterday?"
"Sure i do. Go right ahead" (as if i could be insanely busy with drinking my morning coffee around noon)
"Well after some discussion with the Oroville branch they have decided to offer the teller position to another candidate" (insert inner scream on my part) "however, i wanted to tell you that the two managers were really impressed with your interview that they want to refer you as Teller Manager within our Sacramento region, however, we do not have a Teller Manager position open at this time. If it is okay with you i would like to call you when one opens up if you are still interested?"

So. . . of course. . . I said 'Yes' and i realize it may be some time before that happens and maybe not at all but i think it boosted my self confidence a little and that's sometimes more rewarding than a pay check.

Christmas in a Nutshell

I wanted to back pedal and give you a photo time-line of my simple and quick Christmas. Thanksgiving was very nice also, however, I have no photos for that month!

A week before Christmas Kara, Jacob, Emma and I traveled about an hour out of town towards Chester and hiked a bit to find a perfect Christ
mas tree - what ever that may be!

After passing a few snow ball fights off the road and passing up Charlie Brown's and Miracle on 34th Street trees we found one a few hundred yards away from the road. Kara did the honors and cut it down. I decorated it a few days later with my Christmas Disney Bells my mom gave me a few years ago.

Yes, I admit it. I decorate my animals in Holiday decor.

A few days before Christmas I took the 5 1/2 hour drive to my parents which on a normal day only take 4 hours. Since we rather be snowmobiling during that week and won’t have any more family come visit my mom does not decorate much. She had a simply lighted wreath on the front door, friends and families Christmas cards on the living room cabinet, and presents on the Christmas Piano. Yes that's right! She said she didn't want to bother with a tree this year so she converted her mother’s old-fashion piano with snowmen and small Christmas joy! A hand full of presents surrounded the piano which mostly belonged to my brother because i received my gift last month - a Canon XSi!

Vada also enjoyed unwrapping her Organic Peanut Butter treats on Christmas morning.

For those of you who do not know about my families cookie tradition, my mothers family has a cookie recipe that has been made during the Christmas season for over 60 years. They resemble sugar cookies but use baker's ammonia. Usually we are in Montana and make 2 or 3 batches for the entire family but this year we made only one batch (168 cookies).
Mom and I frosted them and my dad used his talented creative hands to top them off with colorful decorations (I swear he is really talented – I am sure you would believe me more if I said my 5 year old cousin decorated them).
